Real Madrid’s hope of seeing Cristiano Ronaldo return from injury in time for the new season have been dealt a serious blow. 

Ronaldo sustained a knee injury in the final match of the Euro 2016 after a collision with Dimitri Payet and was confirmed that the winger will miss the European Super Cup final with Sevilla on August 9.

The Portuguese is currently on a recovery program while holidaying in Ibiza during which he has attended a medical clinic for specialist oxygen treatment in efforts to accelerate the recovery period from a knee problem. This means that the 31-year-old is set to be sidelined in Real’s two opening La Liga fixtures and Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo respectively and will also miss Portugal’s World Cup 2018 qualifier against Switzerland.

However, Ronaldo should be available for the Los Blancos against Osasuna on September 11 and will be hoping to better last season’s form by winning the La Liga title from Barcelona. Ronaldo is among the 10 shortlisted players for the European player of the year award and he is favoured to win owing to a successful 2015/2016 campaigns winning the Champions league with Real Madrid and Euro 2016 with Portugal.

The winner for the award will be announced in Monaco on August 5, same night the 2016/2017 Champions League group stage draw will take place.
